At the corner of Canal and Lafayette a building was found to be structurally unsound. The building, which is in jeopardy of collapsing, is located directly above subway train tunnels. As a result much subway traffic is disrupted.

By a 4 to 3 vote, the next School's Chancellor will be Domenech, despite the Mayor's protests.

A laughable kink in the city's plans to raise the fine for "jay walking" has been identified. The law defines "jay walking" as walking in the crosswalk against the light, however it does not say anything about crossing in the middle of the street outside the crosswalk. Officials are working on broadening the definition in an effort to give out more fines.

NY1 News continues it's investigation of the Feast of San Gennaro, reporting today that festival donated about $7,500 of the proceeds to charity and about $66,000 to festival organizers.

City Hall hosted a visit from Oklahoma residents who wanted to thank New York for the team of 80 rescue workers who were on hand for the cleanup after the Federal Building bombing last April.

Due to overcrowding in New York schools some students are being bused to nearby areas.

Subways will be slowing down to provide better safety between areas where signal lights are too close together. This policy change is the result of several accidental collisions in the last few months.

The Time-Warner and Turner deal is going through, creating one of the world's largest entertainment and media companies.

The New York Police Department is asking citizen's to report any sightings of a license plate with the writing "SOBER". The vehicle has been linked to the recent murder of a central park jogger. If you have information, please call 577-TIPS.

Computer News

Today is host to "Java Day in New York" being held at The Equitable Building (787 Seventh at 51st). Sun Microsystem, the workstation giant, is debuting is strategy for it's new Java technology. Mediabridge Infosystem will be there show off "The Paperless Guide to New York" with Java enhancements.

Donations from New Yorkers have begun to stream in to the family of the jogger recently slain in Central Park. The money will go toward the cost of shipping Maria Isabela Monteiro Alves body back to Rio. In related news, the Mayor has announced a $63,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the murder.

The City Council is expected to agree to remove fire and police alarm boxes from street corners throughout the city. Several groups claim that the boxes cause more problems than they solve due to the expense of operating them and to the large volume of false alarms. Other groups in poor neighborhoods feel that they will suffer the most at the loss of these boxes because poors residents are less likely to have phones for dialing 911, and pay phones are more often malfunctioning in their areas.

Newt Gingrich, suffering many blows from New York citizens and politicians, has tried to repeal some of his criticisms of The Big Apple. He says that his remarks were directed at Patrick Moynihan, who he feels is not supporting the Mayor and Govenor.

Yesterday a female jogger was found brutally murdered near 107th Street in Central Park. She was 44 years old, worked in a shoe store, and was an avid jogger, but her name has not been released because her family in Rio has not yet been located.

Carol Gresser and the Mayor are arguing over the hiring process for the new school board chancellor. The Mayor is being accused of intimidating candidates for an already unpopular position.

Gaugin, a gay club, has entered a battle with The Plaza Hotel. The Plaza is trying to remove the club, which is located on its ground floor, for it's "deviant" behavior, and the club is counter-suing for discrimination.

Another public hearing with the MTA is scheduled for tonight to discuss the proposed fare hikes. Opponents of the plan complain that it represents nothing more than a new tax on the poor.

Tonight starts the first of 5 public hearings by the MTA over the increase in token costs to $1.50.

Chinese gang violence, such as the kidnapping of three chinese immigrants last week, is being tied to recent crimes in Seattle.

Investigators report that the death of a vagrant by drowning was the result of being chased by several youths. They believe that the incident was motived by revenge for an incident where the vagrant stabbed one of the youths' dog the previous week.

Manhattan's Diamond District

A crook tried to pull a fast-one over at a diamond store yesterday by swapping a diamond for a fake. When the clerk silently called for help with the thief someone saw him swallow the stolen merchandise. X-ray's have verified that the thief's stomach is holding the $6,000 jewel.

A fire gutted the 13th floor of a building at 123rd st yesterday, killing at least three. The blaze was the result of a cigarette left unattended on a living room couch.
