The Coney Island ride, Jumbo Jet, opened for service 48 hours after an accident injuring two people. The ride is operating without permission from officials who are taking action to shut it down.

Another water main on the upper West Side broke causing another deluge. The failure of the 92-year-old water main did not do as much damage as the previous water main break earlier this month. Three young men were killed and a fourth critically injured when their car sped off a ramp the the Queensboro Bridge.

New York City's Department of Health reported that the New York City public school cafeterias were kept clean.
A gunman quarreled with a former girlfriend in a Harlem apartment. The quarrel left her wounded and two others killed, the superintendent and a neighbor.

New York City's School Board is experiencing delays in tallying the votes from the last school board election. Problems stem from several technological glitches.

New York city airporst experienced several delays when air traffice controllers reduced the number of flights. Radar screens were malfunctioning, reporting minimal data, requiring air traffic controllers to reduce flights in and out of New York causing delays of up to one hour.

Record high temperatures left New Yorkers sweltering in the heat as spring completely passed us by. Monday's high was 96 degrees passing the previous record of 91 degrees in 1951.

Construction at the Lexington Avenue and 53rd Street subway station will distrupt service for many commuters. The MTA is installing new escalators closing the station to commuters on the E, F, and 6. Metrocard users will be able to obtain a free transfer from these lines.

Caseworkers from the child welfare agency staged a protest in front of City Hall. They were protesting the suspension of the two caseworkers of the Elisa Izquierdo case and the lack of action against top level administrators.

Mayor Giuliani propsed a $32.7 billion budget, making cuts across the city. Social agencies have complained about the austerity of the budget. Mayor Giuliani is trying to cover a forecasted deficit in the city budget this year.

Bishop Daily,, the head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, accused the manager of the diocesan pension office of embezzlement. The manager is accused of embezzling more than $1 million from the fund.

Two former partners of Helmsley Spears realty firm have sued the Helmsleys. They have accused Leona Helmsley of stripping the company of its assets, rendering the company insolvent, in order to prevent payment to its partners.

Subway service is returned to normal after the water main break on Saturday.

Saturday, May 4, 1996

A water main break at 40th street and Broadway, left much of midtown impossible to travel. Subway service in the midtown area has been suspended. The following subways have been bypassing service in the midtown area, 1, 2, 3, S, A, C, E, 7.



Thursday May 2, 1996

Subways on the 4, 5, and 6 lines were shut down yesterday around 7pm. A beam fell on the third electrical line causing a series of explosions. Many passengers thought the explosions were bombs and quickly left the station.



Wednesday May 1, 1996

A judge on the Bronx State Supreme Court reinstated the school board of district 9. Chancellor Rudy Crew had suspended the board because of corrupt practices. Justice Crispino ruled that Chancellor Crew had overstepped his bounds.
