Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield is is seeking state approval to become a
for-profit health care provider. Blue Cross and Blue Shield is one of the
largest nonprofit health provider. It plans to set up a foundation to
provide health insurance to those that don't have their own.
Chancellor Rudy Crew is contemplating instituting an experimental program
of year-round schooling, in hopes of alleviating school crowding.
Funeral services for slain rap star Tupac Shakur were held in Harlem
yesterday. Tupac Shakur died of gun wounds inflicted in a drive-by
shooting.
Voters in Brooklyn were not able to vote for the primary because voting
machines were delivered late. There will probably be another election.
Funeral services were held for Nadine Lockwood, who was found starved to
death last week. Many onlookers came to offer their condolences.
The Landmarks Preservation Commision has designated six new city living
landmarks. These landmarks are people who make New York, New York. This
year's landmarks are Brook Astor, Al Hirschfeld, Liz Smith, Dr. Mathilde
Krim, Felix Rohatyn, and Peter Duchin. Six living landmarks were
designated last year and in 1994.
Overcrowded school conditions persisted yesterday as New York City
elementary schools opened.
Schools started today with a severe shortage in space. Classes were
extremely overcrowded and many repairs to schools were still not finished.
The caseworker in charge of the Lockwood case was dismissed today. Nadine
Lockwood left her four year daughter to starve in her apartment.
A four-year girl was found dead in a Washington Heights apartment. The
cause of death is apparently starvation and withholding of medical
attention. Her mother is charged with her death.
