December 15... Macy's Window Displays

Macys, Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany, Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys... what strange bedfellows would go through all the trouble of spending the time, effort and money to decorate their windows in such an opulent display, defying all economic sensibilities? The obvious answer, of course, is attracting customers but New Yorkers know that the reasons go beyond commercial.

In the spectacular window displays of New York City, politics and social commentary are played out on this miniature stage. In the month of December, every day sees thousands of people stroll by hoping to obtain a year's worth of memories and reflection in the diorama displays scattered around the city.

Macys, at 34th Street and Herald Square, delivers displays, ranging from Macys itself, to a magical White Christmas scene of the World Trade Center, Brooklyn Bridge and Santa leaving the scene of the crime. On a more political note, in another display Mayor Rudy Giuliani and wife look on as their son, and New York's favorite brat, shows his shy side. It's never too early to start: Rudy and Andrew in 1998!

Macy's window displays have been a part of the New York City Christmas experience for nearly a century. Every day until Christmas, Mediabridge Infosystems will present another facet of the New York City holiday season to the World Wide Web.

Thanks for stopping by and taking part in our virtual New York City.
