The caseworker and supervisor of the city child welfare department in charge of Elisa Izquierdo's case was suspended for 30 days without pay after being charged with failure to protect Elisa. The Giuliani Administration is seeking to have both employees dismissed.



Monday April 29, 1996

Bernhard Goetz filed for bankruptcy, to prevent seizureo of his assets. Mr. Goetz must pay $43 million to Darrell Cabey.



Friday April 26, 1996

The New York City public school system will lose at least $30 million in state aid. Local officals had signed leases for buildings to alleviate overcrowding without state approval



Thursday April 25, 1996

Day 2 of the sale of "Camelot" resulted in record prices. Jackie Onassis estate was put on the Sotheby's auction block a two days ago.



Wednesday April 24, 1996

Bernhard Goetz is ordered to pay $43 million dollars in the civil suit by Darrell Cabey. Mr. Goetz does not have the money to pay to the defendant.

Subway service on the 6 lines were halted yesterday evening during rush hour. The cause of the halt was a electical cable explosion in downtown Brooklyn resulting in a power failure.

Tuesday April 23, 1996

A 7-month old girl fell to her death yesterday in the Bronx. She fell off of a four-story high fire escape.

Closing arguments were delivered at Bernhard Goetz's civil trial yesterday. The lawyer for Darrell Cabey, asked the jury to take Mr. Goetz at his word. The prosecution lawyer, tried to downplay Mr. Goetz's words when he took the witness stand last week.


Monday April 22, 1996

A gunman shot two brothers at a Bronx Barber shop. One of the brothers, Victor Cuenca was in critical condition, and his brother Sergio was killed.

Mayor Giuliani is reevaluating the proposed multi-purpose stadium. He is open to other suggestions.

NYNEX and Bell Alantic agreed to merge. The merger would result in the second-largest phone company in the US, behind AT&T.

Friday April 19, 1996

A brush fire in the Bronx halted Metro-North trains on the New Haven Line from entering and leaving Manhattan during rush hour last night. Metro-North had problems providing service to commuters earlier this year, during the blizzard.



Thursday April 18, 1996

Mayor Giuliani announced that he would be submitting a new budget proposal. The budget proposal would require laying off about 12,000 city workers.



Wednesday April 17, 1996

Bronx grand-jury indicted Angel Diaz with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a police officer. Attorney General Dennis Vacco may pursue the death penalty. Governer Pataki removed Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson because of his anti-death penalty stance.

Darrell Cabey's mother testified at the trial of Bernard Goetz, the "subway vigilante".

Mayor Giuliani swore in the new Police Commissioner, Howard Safir, yesterday. Former Commissioner Bratton resigned earlier this month. Commissioner Safir was the former Fire Comissioner.



Monday April 15, 1996
Last day to file taxes without penalty.

Police faced a hostage situation in the Bronx. The suspected 17 year. old armed robber ran straight into the police as he left an apartment building. He ran back in to the apartment building and grabbed a 15 year old female hostage. The stand-off ended with an arrest later this evening.

Fordham University is offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who might have clues about the suspect in the rape of a female Fordham student this weekend.

Columbia students have ended their hunger strike for ethnic studies. Today was day 15 of the strike.



Friday April 12, 1996

Five tenants were injured and three children killed in a fire at a Bronx apartment house. Firefighters classified fire as suspicious, due to the quickness with which it spread.



Thursday April 11, 1996

New York State Supreme Court justice, Marylin Diamond, struck down a state law that granted a state board power to decide union contracts as unconstitutional inteference by the state into city affairs. This is blow to the union and a coup for Mayor Giuliani in his negotiations with the union.

The dispute over Doris Duke's $1.2 biliion estate seems to be over. The tentative settlement requires that Bernard Lafferty, her butler, give up his executor role, but allows him to keep a large sum of his money.

Columbia students held a press conference on campus today to outline their demands for an ethnic studies program. This is a continuation of previous demonstrations, including the occupation of several administration buildings and a hunger strike, lasting ten days so far.

Bernard Goetz, the famous subway vigilante of New York, now faces a civil trial 11 years after shooting 4 teens on a subway.

Four children found in a squalid Brooklyn apartment say their parents went to Haiti in January and never returned. The oldest, a 10-year-old, called the police.

Bad weather expected over the holiday weekend with percipitation and cold weather.

Ron Brown, native New Yorker and former Harlem resident, who has been serving under Clinton as the US Secretary of Commerce, is believed dead. His plane went down in the Balkans near or in Croatia. He was in the region with a contingency of US technology representatives looking for ways in which the US could help rebuild the infrastructure of the war-torn region.

On the subway, a male (believed homeless) stabbed a passenger repeatedly last night. The attacker was disgruntled after being awoken by his would-be victim because he was taking up several seats.

Mayor Guilliani has publically admitted that he is a space-alien, but has assured his consistituents that all his staff members are US citizens. Rumors abound that former police chief Bratton was aware of this charade, but did not come forward out of fear that the budget for his department would be cut further.

Yesterday, the Spring Flower show opened at Macy's and should run for about two weeks.
