Memorial Day
On Memorial Day, the Americans honor the soldiers who sacrificed their lives while in the military service. The day is declared as a national holiday and will be celebrated on the last Monday of May, i.e. May 29th 2017 this year. We should be grateful to our armed force who sacrificed their life to protect and serve our country. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteer place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.
Different Memorial parades takes place in the New York City in honor of our fallen heroes. Brooklyn's Memorial Day Parade begins from Third Ave. to 78th St. at 11am on May 29, 2017, ending at Fort Hamilton. The Little Neck–Douglaston Memorial Day Parade is considered as the biggest parade which departs from various locations at 2 pm on May 29, 2017. The parades are free and open to public
Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer. New York City offers several events for enjoying the Memorial Day weekend.
Memorial Day Events
Fleet Week is a seven-day celebration in New York City, which honors the members of the United States Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps. Every year, the weeklong party kicks off with the Parade of Ships—a flotilla of visiting vessels and tall ships that cruise along the Hudson river—and continues with military demonstrations, a Memorial Day ceremony and more outstanding things to do around some great New York City attractions.
The annual Memorial Day concert at Green-Wood Cemetery kicks off with the ISO Symphonic Band led by Brian Worsdale. Later in the evening take a special trolley tour with a Green-Wood historian. Food and refreshments will be provided by local vendors throughout the day.
It’s a truly beautiful and moving tribute to the events that take place, especially during Memorial Day weekend.
