The Vista hotel is set to reopen after the Trade Center explosion. The hotel had been closed because of structural damage due to the explosion.

Mario Cuomo has been steadily catching his republican opponent, George Pataki, in the polls.

The New York Lottery is now up to $70 Million dollars!

Shortly before 9 am this morning, two robbers broke into Lloyd Jensen Jewelers on Madison Avenue. They held two employees at gunpoint and got off with an estimated 1 million dollars in merchandise.

The New York post has endorsed George Pataki for Governor. It appears that the latest polls that are out show that Mario Cuomo's campaign has picked up some steam and the race is now a virtual dead heat.

The President of Ireland is meeting with the leader of some of the protestant parties of Northern Ireland in New York because he is forbidden by the Irish constitution to meet with them in Ireland.

Police have arrested a suspect in the latest incidence of rape in Central Park. He was picked up by police in an unrelated assault on someone else in the park. While the police questioned him, he started to talk about the rape.

3 men have been arrested for yelling racial slurs at several members of the New York Police Department.

Lines are forming at stores that sell tickets for the New York Lottery. The jackpot is now up to $40 million dollars!!!

They city is taking the initiative in regulating the adult entertainment industry.

Mayor Giuliani came out yesterday in support of Mario Cuomo for Governor of New York. He is taking a large political risk in not endorsing the candidate of his party, but he said that he believed Mario Cuomo would be the best governor for the city of New York.

Mayor Giuliani has outlined where he will be cutting 800 Million dollars from the city's budget. Cuts will be across the board and deep. City workers will have to do more with less. He is even cutting his own staff to show how important this actually is for the city's economy.

Fortune Magazine reports that New York City is the best city in America for global business! New York is ranked number 2 in the world, right behind Hong Kong.

Mayor Giuliani and his aides burned the midnight oil last night working on new budget cuts that will help save the city up to 850 Million dollars. Mayor Giuliani claimed that the budget cuts were healthy for the city and critical to its fiscal survival.

A robbery was foiled at the ATM machine of the Independent Savings Bank in Brooklyn. Two friends came to the aid of the woman he attacked and held the robber there until police came. This is the second robbery of it's type that was foiled in the past week.

Pro-choice and Pro-life demonstrations are being held in New York City Sunday afternoon. Pro-choice activists will be protesting on 5th Avenue and 59th Street. The will be protesting against Gubernatorial candidate George Pataki who they say is not really in support of their cause. Pro-life advocates will be demostrating about ten blocks south on 50th Street. They will be advocating adoption as a better alternative to abortion.

New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani proclaims that the new contract with the custodians union will be good for the city. Custodians will now be responsible for their jobs and will no longer operate as private contractors without any checks or balances.

Judy Cappell has been saving cats and other animals through an organization she started called City Critters. She rescues stray animals from Department of Transportation installations and puts them up for adoption.

An off duty police officer had a six inch gash slashed in his face by a 21 year old Queens man.

Mayor Giuliani wants to merge the city and housing police officers department. Even though the courts have blocked this action, he is considering firing a plan where he would fire all 2500 housing officers and re-hire them as New York City cops.

New York City police have an arrest and another suspect in the brutal murder of a 34th Street newspaper salesman.

Members of the hispanic community are dennouncing the board of education's conclusion that bilingual education is a waste of money. They are afraid it will be used to justify policies against bilingual education.

President Clinton is on his way to New York City this afternoon to help Governor Cuomo get re-elected. Governor Cuomo is stuggling in the polls and fighting for his political life. Expect delays in midtown traffic as a result.

Daily News backs George Pataki in his race for Governor. Mayor Giuliani has still not endorsed anyone in the race.

Some good citzens held a crook inside an ATM room after he attacked one of the patrons of the Chemical bank at Lexington Avenue and 60th Street. They held him there until a police officer could come and arrest the attacker.

A gang of 10 or 12 men with ski masks held a garage attendant at gunpoint while they went and stole expensive cars from the garage. One of the cars was later recovered up in the Bronx.

The investment house Kidder Peabody has been sold to Paine Webber for 650 million dollars. It is expected that close to half of the 2,200 employees will be laid off.

The East River Ferry has been re-opened for the first time since the Great Depression.

Louis Constantino, the transit police officer that was brutally beaten about two weeks ago, left Bellevue Hospital this morning with a reconstructed face. He has been in the hospital since October 2nd.

Mayor Giuliani wants illegal vendors on 125th Street to move. The police tried moving them this morning and many of them were arrested when they tried to resist in protest. The city government is working in conjunction with a local mosque to create space at 117th Street as an alternative market.

The editor in chief of the Columbia University student newspaper is under investigation for allegedly pulling a false fire alarm in one of Columbia's residence halls to get a picture of one of the fire department's new trucks. She was forced to resign from the paper.

This weekend is cleanup weekend, when volunteers from around the city pitch in to clean up parks and public areas in the 5 boroughs.

A Rookie Brooklyn cop assigned to the 83rd precinct was shot this afternoon and was saved by his bullet-proof vest!

Mayor Giuliani has targeted the panhandlers that hold the door open for you when you visit many of Manhattan's ATM machines. His new proposed bill would prohibit begging within 20 feet of cash machines. The ACLU has come out again the bill claiming that it is unnecessary and discriminatory.

Monday night, Vice President Al Gore is endorsing N.J. Congressman Frank Lautenberg for re-election to the Senate seat. President Clinton was scheduled to appear at the Meadowlands Hilton event but had to cancel because of responsibilities related to the tension in the Persian Gulf.

The NY Police Department is asking a female police officer to return a Plymouth Neon that she won at a bar. The unidentified police officer bought three beers using department money for herself and two investigators. The purchase automatically entered her into a Coors beer drawing for a car. She won, and now the City Board of Ethics will decide on the matter.

Two robbers, posing as cops, robbed a luxury penthouse apartment on Fifth Avenue, stealing four antique jewelry boxes worth over $200,000.

We are expecting the first frost of the year in New York this evening.

Guy Molinari has made an issue of the fact that his opponent, Diane Feinstein, in the race for State Attorney General is a self-proclaimed lesbian. He says that that makes her unfit to be the state's attorney general.

New York City marathon organizer Fred Lebow died this Sunday of brain cancer. He will be remembered as one who changed the consciousness of people who lived in the city by making them more mindful of physical fitness and health.

Funeral services for Fire Wayne Smith are taking place today.

An attacker stabbed a biker in the chest last night. The attack was apparently unprovoked and the police are investigating. The attacker didn't have a criminal record, but did have a history of psychiatric illness.

The jobless rate in the city has dropped by more than a point.

Former Mayor David Dinkins formerly announced that he would be supporting incumbent Governor Mario Cuomo for re-election.

A ninth suspect in the beating of police officer Cosentino surrendered to a Channel 2 News reporter minutes after a broadcast on the attack.

A legal strike continues to stifle the NYC court system, as the Legal Aid Society picketed outside courthouses. MAyor Giuliani threatens to fire all picketers today if they do not return to their jobs.

Fire Captain Wayne Smith of Ladder Company 166 dies from burns he got while fighting a fire in Jackson Heights. He had suffered burns over 20% of his body and was being treated at New York Hospital's burn unit. He leaves behind a wife and kids.

Jean-Bertrand Aristide is going to address the UN general assembly today. He is expected to receive a hero's welcome.

9 NYC police officers were caught shaking down prostitutes

A 25 year old transit officer committed suicide yesterday after having marched in the Pulaski day parade.

The prosecutor from the O.J. Simpson trial came to New York to deliver the key-note address at a conference on domestic violence given at the Jewish Museum.

Eight teenagers have been arrested in the brutal beating of Transit Police Sergeant Louis Constantino. Sargent Constantino is currently resting at Bellevue Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

A BYU senior, Jason Pyrah, beat Irish Olympian Marcus O'Sullivan by 6/10 of a second to win the NY Road Runners Club Fifth Avenue Mile on Sunday.
