158th Street and Broadway. Eyewitnesses say that the police were

Elkin Farley Salazar, a 26 year-old drug dealer, was sentenced to 18 years
in federal prison. He had testified against the Cali drug cartel and some
of his former colleagues for killing Manuel de Dios Unanue. Unanue was a
journalist who wrote articles that angered the cartel and its members.

The New York office of the German tourist board has been exposed as a
hotbed of neo-nazi propaganda and racism. They apparently had instruction
manuals for their employees on how to discourage Jews, Asians, and Blacks
from visiting Germany.

Queens & Long Island
Long Island Railroad Engineers are having a "sick-out." The engineers
have been working without a contract for four years now. City and
Railroad officials are suggesting that you use Park & Ride facilities
available in Queens and Brooklyn.

Manhattan
A memorial for the victims of the World Trade Center Bomb was unveiled
today in the memory of the six people that lost their lives in that tragedy.
The monument is located on the main plaza at the Trade Center.

New York's 21 Club is for sale. Apparently business interests from
Las Vegas as well as Atlantic City are interested more for the name
than the restaurant itself.

Queens
A female black bear was found gutted with a crucifix stuffed in its gut in
a New York City park in Queens. The bear was believed to have been captured
in Bear Mountain State Park and brought to the city. The bear is believed
to have been sacrificed as part of a Santerian ritual. Santeria is an
Afro-Caribbean ritual practiced by some people in the area.

Manhattan
A driver of a BMW was critically injured when he drove his car down a four
story elevator shaft. He did not realize that the elevator hadn't come yet.
Emergency Medical Services workers arrived quickly and brought the man to
Bellevue Hospital after they freed him from the wreckage.

New York City Police Officers were accused of going on a drunken spree in
Washington D.C. at the Hyatt Regency and Bellevue Hotels. They were
apparently vandalizing rooms, parading around naked, pouring beer down
escalators harassing guests, and pulling fire alarms. An investigation
will be conducted by the NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau on the matter and
officers that participated will be strictly disciplined.

Over 8,000 students graduated today from Columbia University. Graduation
ceremonies were held at the Morningside Campus in Manhattan.

Manhattan
School teacher Glenn Harris is returning to New York to face kidnapping
charges. The 15 year old girl he kidnapped is expected home tomorrow. He
was on the road for 2 months with the girl and said he did it to stop the
abuse he claimed she was getting at home.
Manhattan
The Stuyvesant town rapist has been sentenced to over 40 years in prison.
He started attacking women after being released from a Florida State prison
where he was serving a term for raping three women in Florida. Some of his
victims spoke against him at his trial.

The American Society of Travel Agencies has listed New York City as
the most booked destination for foreign travellers, while Fodor's
listed New York City as a destination with some of the worst traveller
experiences.

A registration drive for the New York City Marathon was held today in
Central Park. Sponsored by the New York Road Runners Club, the New
York City Marathon festivities will be held this year from November 8-12.

constructing a 300 million dollar complex. The complex will include a
47 story hotel and an entertainment complex.

Former Tiffany's security guard, Scott Jackson, was sentenced to 15 years
in prison for the 1992 heist in which he stole jewels worth $750,000.
Manhattan
The Japanese owners of Rockefeller Center have filed for bankruptcy and
are looking to sell the New York landmark. The Port Authority of New York
and New Jersey is looking into ways of privatizing the World Trade Center
with the ultimate goal of selling the office complex.

The police department has expanded the Crime Stoppers crime prevention
program to Chinatown. The crime tip phone will be answered by an officer
fluent in Chinese.

Virginia Beattie was discovered in her Brooklyn apartment this morning.
She had been hit over head and the police say that robbery was the
apparent motive. No arrests have been made.
Queens
New York City police officers saved several lives by using some quick
thinking. They were catching people as they jumped out the windows of a
burning building. When an adult put a hole through the awning on which
people were jumping they put their squad car under the awning so it would
break the fall.

According to the New York Post there is a problem with the number of
traffice accidents caused by city bus drivers. In many cases, the Post
reports that bus drivers who have been involved in multiple accidents
have been put right back out on the road even after it was proven
that they were 100% at fault for the accidents in question.

Starting next week, the city's 21,000 garbage pickup trucks will have comic
anti-trash punlines printed on the side. Famous comedians such as Milton
Berle, Richard Belzer, Judy Tenuta, Dick Cavett, Henny Youngman, Gilbert
Gottfried and John Henton all contributed to the campaign.

A 48 year-old priest was charged with attempted rape after allegedly
attacking one of his parisheners in the rectory.
Manhattan
Mayor Giuliani is being accused of destroying rent stabilization. Hearings
are scheduled before the Rent Board before a final decision is made.
Landlords claim that the proposed 4% rent hikes will re-vitalize housing,
tenants claim that the hikes are unreasonable and that there has been a
fundamental change in philosophy on the rent board since the mayor took
office.
Brooklyn
A former aid of the Columbia drug lord Pablo Escobar was sentenced to 10
consecutive life sentences for blowing up a Colombian air-liner 8 years ago.

A crane operator was killed in the Sunnyside railyard. The crane toppled
over and fell from the 39th Street Bridge. After the crane toppled he tried
to jump out of the crane's cab but died from the fall.
Manhattan
The Daily News has moved from it's landmark location to a new location on
33rd and 10th. The art deco skyscraper was featured in movies such as
Superman.

Bronx
About two dozen police officers were implicated in a police corruption
scandal. Charges against the officers include stealing confiscated
narcotics, demanding protection money from drug dealers, and roughing up
suspects.
Manhattan
Former New York district attorney, Kenneth Gribetz, plead guilty to charges
of using county employees to perform personal services not related to their
official work. Gribetz faces a maximum of one year in prison and fines of
at least $200,000.

Hispanic groups organized a protest yesterday in front of the KROCK
radio station, against the controversial "shock-jock" Howard Stern.
Despite an uncharacteristic apology, Stern's comments concerning the
death of Texan-Mexican singer Selena offended many in the Hispanic
community.
The New York Convention and Visitor's Bureau kicked off a new campaign
yesterday to promote tourism in the city, one the eve of the POW WOW
convention to woo travel business.

At the Holocaust Memorial service yesterday at Madison Square Garden,
President Clinton called for a trade embargo with Iran, in response
to their terrorist activities around the world.
The New York Rangers beat the Philadelphia Flyers 2-0 yesterday to
qualify for the National Hockey League post-season playoffs. The
Rangers were in jeapordy of not even making the playoffs to defend
last year's Stanley Cup victory.
